24 December 2016, New York: The main part of the seventy-first session of the General Assembly concluded on 23 December 2016 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Mohamed Asim led the Maldives delegation to the seventy-first session. The Minister attended the high level segment of the session and delivered the Address statement at the General Debate on 24 September 2016. During the main part of the seventy-first session, the Maldives delegation delivered thirty-three statements and co-sponsored 42 resolutions on a range of issues including advancement of women, sustainable development, countering terrorism, situation in the Middle East and Palestine, reform of the Security Council and oceans and law of the sea. The delegation was also actively engaged on negotiations on a range of issues across the General Assembly's programme of work. This included negotiations on rights of the child and women, climate change, small island developing States, disaster risk reduction, and the situation in Syria.

As the Chair of the Alliance of Small Island Developing States, the Maldives represented the Group of 37 UN Member States in the deliberations concerning sustainable development, climate change, disaster risk reduction and oceans.

The Maldives delegation to the seventy-fifth session included Attorney-General Mr. Mohamed Anil, Foreign Secretary Dr. Ali Naseer Mohamed and Permanent Representative of Maldives to the United Nations Mr. Ahmed Sareer. The delegation comprised representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Attorney General's Office, the Ministry of Environment and Energy as well as the Permanent Mission of Maldives to the United Nations in New York.
