New York, 10 April 2017; Speaking at the United Nations Security Council Open Arria Formula meeting, H.E. Mr Ahmed Sareer, Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the United Nations, called on to intensify efforts to finance adaptation and mitigation mechanisms that can help developing countries, particularly small island developing states like the Maldives, to reduce the risks posed to their security from the threat of sea-level rise.
In its intervention on the subject, "Security Implications of Climate Change: Sea-level rise", held today, the Maldives warned of the serious dangers to low- lying coastal communities around the world due to sea- level rise such as the Maldives.
The Maldives highlighted the fact that Paris Agreement was a historic milestone in the global efforts to address climate change; however the nationally determined contributions is not consistent with our global goal to hold the increase in the global average temperature to well below 2°C. The Maldives also requested the Secretary- General to update the 2009 report on climate change and its possible security implications and review efforts of relevant UN organs in addressing these issues. The review must include an assessment of the United Nations System with regard its capacity to respond to the security implications of climate change, insisted the Maldives.
The Open Arria- Formula meeting was convened by the Permanent Representative of Ukraine, H.E.Volodymyr Yelchenko and co- chaired by the Permanent Representative of Germany, H.E. Harald Braun. The meeting was also addressed by the Special Representative of the Secretary General for Human Rights of Internally Displaced Persons and members of the Security Council.
