The new Permanent Representative of the Republic of Maldives to the United Nations, His Excellency Mr. Ahmed Sareer today presentedhis Letter of Credence to the United Nations Secretary-General, His Excellency Mr.Ban Ki-moon.

At the ceremony, which was held in the United Nations Headquarters, AmbassadorSareer conveyed the greetings of the President, the Government and the peopleof Maldives to the Secretary-General of the United Nations. He reaffirmed thecommitment of the Maldives to fully uphold and respect the principles containedin the Charter of the United Nations and as a Member State, to further contributeto achieving the goals of the organization, in promoting development, peace andharmony.

 

Ambassador Sareer thanked the Secretary-General for the continued support ofthe United Nations to the Maldives in its national developmental efforts, on climatechange and human rights, and the constructive and complementary role the UnitedNations has played on the ground in Male’. He also conveyed the appreciation of theGovernment for the close cooperation the United Nations has offered in providingtechnical assistance to the ongoing democratic reforms in the country, especially theelectoral assistance being provided for the upcoming Presidential Elections in 2013.

Maldives Permanent Representative Ahmed Sareer and United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki MoonA career foreign service officer, Ambassador Sareer had previously served as theHigh Commissioner of Maldives to Bangladesh, Deputy High Commissioner to theUnited Kingdom, Chargé d'affaires of the Maldives Mission to the European Union,Deputy High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, and Director at the SAARC Secretariat,amongst others. In a previous tenure, he had also served in the Maldives Mission inNew York from 1992-1994.

Ambassador Sareer began his career in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1986, andhas held a number of positions in the Ministry and has represented the Maldives invarious international conferences.
