21 October 2011, New York; Maldives today, pledged to continue to work with the international community, namely the Special Rapporteur on the Independence of Judges and Lawyers and the International Commission of Jurists, to address the challenges facing the judiciary system of the country. During an intervention made following a statement delivered by Ms. Gabriela Knaul, Special Rapporteur on the Independence of Judges and Lawyers, at the 66th United Nations General Assembly, Maldives also recognised that legitimacy is the key to an independence judiciary and to gain legitimacy women must be represented at all levels.

The intervention also highlighted on the achievements the Maldives had made, in establishing a Supreme Court, intermediate courts and lower courts, and a Judicature bill laying out the procedures and jurisdiction of various courts.
