The Maldives has today appealed to the larger states with more resources to commit themselves towards more programmes for utilising clean and renewable energy in order to reduce the world’s carbon footprint. This appeal was made by the Maldives delegate to the 67th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Hassan Hussain Shihab.

Speaking at the general debate of the Second Committee, Hassan Shihab explained that the Maldives is doing whatever it can to build its resilience to combat the effects of climate change.  He stated that the Government of Maldives is currently spending more than 27% of its national budget for this purpose. He then questioned on how a small island country with fewer resources and many constraints could achieve this goal on its own.

During the debate, he highlighted the commitment of the Maldives to the implementation of the decisions of the Rio+20 UN conference. In particular he hoped that progress would be made during the current session of the general assembly on decisions made in Rio+20 that are relevant to Small Island Developing States.
