The Republic of Maldives and the Republic of Moldova have formally established diplomatic relations today. The Joint Communiqué formalising diplomatic relations between the two countries was signed on behalf of the Government of Maldives, by H.E. Mr. Ahmed Sareer, Chargé d'affaires of the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Maldives to the United Nations and by H.E. Mr. Vladimir Lupan, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Moldova to the United Nations, on behalf of the Government of Moldova. President Dr Mohamed Waheed has today established the Ministry of Gender, Family and Human Rights, and appointed Ms. Fathimath Dhiyana Saeed as the Minister. Formerly, Ms. Dhiyana served as the youngest and only female Secretary General of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation. However, she resigned her post in protest of the illegal actions being taken by former President Nasheed in the weeks leading up to the former President's resignation.
