Cabinet decides to Reduce 15% of Budgeted Expenditure

Maldives Cabinet The cabinet has today decided to reduce 15% from the budgeted expenditure of the State. The decision was made at today’s meeting, following discussions on a paper presented by the Ministry of Finance and Treasury on the fiscal state of the country.

Members agreed to minimise the State expenditure, in a way that the primary services provided to the people by the government were not interrupted.

Members of the cabinet also discussed ways to minimise State expenditure, and steps that could be taken to increase State revenue.

Maldives President Dr. Waheed President Dr Mohamed Waheed has said that the measures taken by the government, in the last 100 days had encouraged unity among the people, and instilled national spirit. The President made this remark at the press conference held this afternoon, to mark the first 100 days since his assumption of office as the President of Maldives.

In his press statement, President Waheed said that in the last 100 days, he had put in his maximum efforts in serving the people most dedicatedly. The President noted that the state of the country was not at an optimum, at the time of his assumption of office. Continuing on, the President said that the whole country had been politically divided and disharmonised, and that the economy was at an extremely low point.

Stating that a lot was still needed to establish and strengthen a modern democratic system in the Maldives, the President said that he would not take a step back in accomplishing it.

The Joint Communiqué formalising diplomatic relations between the two countries was signed on behalf of the Government of Maldives, by H.E. Mr. Ahmed Sareer, Chargé d'affaires of the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Maldives to the United Nations and by H.E. Mr. Vladimir Lupan, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Moldova to the United Nations, on behalf of the Government of Moldova. The ceremony was held at the Permanent Mission of the Maldives to the United Nations.

Minister for Gender, Family and Human RightsPresident Dr Mohamed Waheed has today established the Ministry of Gender, Family and Human Rights, and appointed Ms. Fathimath Dhiyana Saeed as the Minister. Formerly, Ms. Dhiyana served as the youngest and only female Secretary General of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation. However, she resigned her post in protest of the illegal actions being taken by former President Nasheed in the weeks leading up to the former President's resignation.
