Minister Asim calls on the Government of Myanmar to respect its human rights obligations under International Law

22 September 2017, New York, The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Mohamed Asim participated in the Annual OIC Foreign Minister's meeting held on the margins of the Seventy Second Session of the United Nations General Assembly.

While speaking at the meeting, Minister Asim reflected on some of the pressing challenges faced by the Muslim world and called for urgent action, particularly on the issue of Rohingya Muslims. He called on the Government of Myanmar to respect its human rights obligations under international law, international humanitarian law and human rights covenants. He further called on the Muslim Ummah to take appropriate steps to stop the genocide and ethnic cleansing in Rakhine State. Minister noted that the Maldives has launched nationwide activities to raise funds to help the Rohingya Muslims and added that the Government has also ceased all trade ties with Myanmar, until it takes measures to prevent the atrocities being committed against Rohingya Muslims.

Strength in the Group of G77 and China is Unity in Diversity, says Minister Asim

g7722 Septmber 2017, New York, The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Mohamed Asim participated in the Annual Meeting of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Group of 77 and China, held on the margins of the Seventy Second Session of the United Nations General Assembly.

During Minister Asim's Speech, he expressed gratitude for the solidarity offered by the G77, for small states like the Maldives. '...together, the group has made significant strides throughout the negotiation for the Paris Agreement, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable development, Addis Ababa Action Agenda and Sendai Framework on Disaster Risk Reduction' he said.

While appreciating the Group's diversity, Minister Asim also condemned the atrocities taking place in the Northern Rakhine State in Myanmar and called on the Government of Myanmar to bring an end to the atrocities. 'Together we raise the voice of the voiceless and the marginalized. Every day we distract ourselves from the big picture by looking inwards, is truly a day lost in vain' he said.

The Group of 77 was established on 15 June 1964, by seventy-seven developing countries, to promote the collective economic interests of its members.

22 September 2017, New York, The Maldives hosted a Side-Event entitled "Countering Violent Extremism: Promoting Community Level Prevention" at the margins of the Seventy Second Session of the United Nations General Assembly this afternoon. The event was held in partnership with the Permanent Mission of Saudi Arabia to the United Nations. The event was moderated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Mohamed Asim.

During Minister Asim's speech, he stated that no country is immune from the threat of Violent extremism and that it spreads fear, hate, and it challenges the States, and the democratic order in the country. Minister stated that extremists propagate ideology of hate and division, ideologies that reject the Islamic teachings and the values of democratic, progressive, and inclusive societies.
