22 September 2016, New York: Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Mohamed Asim today urged the international community to make the implementation of the Declaration of the Rights to Development a reality not just in aspiration, but in action. Minister Asim made the remark while speaking at the High Level event held to mark the Thirtieth Anniversary of the Rights to Development event held at the sidelines of the 71st UNGA held in New York.

Highlighting that 'political will was a key ingredient in the implementation of the Agenda, Minister Asim highlighted that Governments are not short of arguments, smart ideas, or ways and means. Rather, he stated, Governments seem to be short of drive to change the status quo, or take bold steps forward.

Launch of new partnerships and commitments for the sustainable development of Small Island Developing States

Partnership_Dialogue_122 September 2016, New York; The first annual Global Multi-stakeholder SIDS Partnership Dialogue was held on 22 September 2016 during the 71st session of the General Assembly as a High-level Breakfast Event, focusing on the launch of new partnerships devoted to SIDS, and the announcement of new commitments from existing SIDS partnerships.

The Dialogue is an integral of the SIDS Partnership Framework which was launched by the General Assembly in 2016 as a follow-up to the SIDS Conference, held in Samoa in 2014. The Framework is one of a kind at the United Nations in following up and monitoring progress of voluntary commitments from multi-stakeholder partnerships aimed at driving sustainable development in Small Island Developing States.

Mr. Vincenzo Amendola, Undersecretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Italy, represented by H.E. Mr. Sebastiano Cardi, Permanent Representative of Italy, in collaboration with UN-DESA and UN-OHRLLS, and was attended by over 100 participants from governments, UN entities, civil society representatives, and focal points of SIDS partnerships from all regions of SIDS.

Today marks the 51st anniversary of the Maldives membership at the United Nations. The Maldives joined the United Nations on 21 September 1965 as the Organization's smallest member at the time, with many questioning the viability of a small state like the Maldives, and its ability to contribute.

Over the past fifty-one years the United Nations has been a steadfast partner in the development of the Maldives, contributing to the progress of its social sectors, reduction of infant and maternal mortality rates, and increasing the life expectancy of Maldivians, as well as its democratization and governance reform sectors. With the support of the United Nations, the Maldives was able to graduate out of the LDCs, as well as become an MDG plus country. As we embark on a new sustainable development agenda, the support of the UN in its implementation would be invaluable.
