Mr Ahmed Sareer, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Maldives to the United Nations, called for the inclusion of climate change, alongside sustainable development and sustaining peace, as part of a triangular, inter-linked framework that placed the most vulnerable at the centre, in particular Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

In its intervention at the High-Level Dialogue on "Building Sustainable Peace for All: Synergies between the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and Sustaining Peace", held from 24-25 January 2017, the Maldives warned of the serious risks climate change poses for both the sustaining peace agenda and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which are especially severe for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) such as the Maldives.

Maldives re-appointed Co-Chair of the Steering Committee on Partnerships for Small Island Developing States

New York, 19 January, 2017; The President of the General Assembly His Excellency Peter Thomson has officially re-appointed His Excellency Ahmed Sareer, Permanent Representative of Maldives to the United Nations and His Excellency Sebastiano Cardi, Permanent Representative of Italy to the United Nations as the Co-Chairs of the Steering Committee on Partnerships for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) for the year 2017. As Co-Chair, Ambassador Sareer will play an instrumental role in facilitating partnerships between SIDS and to public and private partners in order to further address the ongoing challenges SIDS face, which include among others, capacity building, climate change, and disaster risk reduction.

The Steering Committee was established by the General Assembly in 2015 as part of the Partnership Framework for SIDS, an initiative established through the S.A.M.O.A.Pathway: the Programme of Action for the sustainable development of SIDS, to support monitoring, followup and reporting on partnerships. It is a unique and pioneering mechanism that also helps drive new and innovative arrangements to further sustainable development. The SIDS Partnership Framework is the first of its kind within the UN, which contains a reporting tool, as well as apply specific SMART criteria (SIDS Specific, Measurability, Attainable, Realistic, Timely) for its partnerships. There are over 300 SIDS partnerships registered currently.

The Maldives welcomes the recent Resolutions adopted by the UN Security Council on Palestine and Syria

During the quarterly debate of the United Nations Security Council on the Middle East which was held today, the Maldives has welcomed the adoption of Resolution 2334, which reaffirms the illegality of Israeli settlements in the occupied territory of Palestine, and calls upon states to distinguish in their relevant dealings, between the territory of the State of Israel and the territories occupied since 1967.

H.E. Mr. Ahmed Sareer, the Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the United Nations stated that this resolution was a demonstration of international political support for bringing an end to illegal Israeli settlements, and reiterated the call for a two state solution recognizing the sovereign and independent State of Palestine, based on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.

The Maldives delegation engaged actively as the 71st session of the UNGA comes to a close

UNGA7124 December 2016, New York: The main part of the seventy-first session of the General Assembly concluded on 23 December 2016 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Mohamed Asim led the Maldives delegation to the seventy-first session. The Minister attended the high level segment of the session and delivered the Address statement at the General Debate on 24 September 2016. During the main part of the seventy-first session, the Maldives delegation delivered thirty-three statements and co-sponsored 42 resolutions on a range of issues including advancement of women, sustainable development, countering terrorism, situation in the Middle East and Palestine, reform of the Security Council and oceans and law of the sea. The delegation was also actively engaged on negotiations on a range of issues across the General Assembly's programme of work. This included negotiations on rights of the child and women, climate change, small island developing States, disaster risk reduction, and the situation in Syria.
