Tsunami3 November 2016, New York; Speaking at the panel discussion held to mark the first World Tsunami Awareness Day, Ambassador Ahmed Sareer, Permanent Representative of Maldives to the United Nations, shared his personal recollections from when the Indian Ocean tsunami of 2004 hit the Maldives, in addition to sharing key lessons learnt in the post-tsunami recovery and rehabilitation.

The events held on the occasion of the first World Tsunami Awareness Day were co-organized by Maldives, Japan, Chile, Indonesia and United Nations Office for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR).

Maldives to continue as Chair of Alliance of Small Island States for 2017-2018

New York, 31 October 2016; The forty-four members and observers of the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) today confirmed the re-appointment of Maldives as the Chair of the Group for two more years. The decision was taken at an Ambassadorial Meeting of the Group held in New York.

The Maldives took up the chairmanship of the Group in January 2015. And subsequently led the Group through a year filled with milestones, beginning with the adoption of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 in March, the Addis Ababa Action Agenda of the Third Conference on Financing for Development in July, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in September, and the Paris Agreement on Climate Change in December. Through all these agreements, SIDS, led by Maldives, were able to carve out special recognition for the specific and unique challenges SIDS face in achieving sustainable development

Fazeel27 October 2016, New York; During the United Nations General Assembly Fourth Committee debate on the Comprehensive Review of the Special Political Missions, the Maldives noted the important role of Special Political Missions in furthering the global peace and security agenda, and, in particular, the United Nations conflict-prevention and peacebuilding efforts. 

On behalf of the Maldives delegation, Mr. Ahmed Fazeel, Director at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, underscored that it is no longer sufficient to simply bringing an end to the armed conflicts, but that States should actively work to prevent conflict and consolidate peace in post-conflict situations through building institutional capacities.

The Minister made this remark following the international seminar on "Counter Terrorism and Violent Extremism: Challenges and Solutions through Shared Experiences" that concluded today. The Seminar, which was held from 25-26 October 2016 in Kurumba Maldives, was organized by the National Counter Terrorism Centre of the Maldives, in association with United Nations, UN Women, and the Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI).

"The threat of terrorism and violent extremism spread fear and hate, and threatens everyday lives of people across the globe. Domestic efforts alone cannot prevent this threat; it requires coordinated and concerted effort to effectively tackle the phenomenon. For this reason, bilateral and international cooperation and sharing of knowledge and expertise are essential in shaping national responses" Minister Asim said.

25 October 2016, New York: At the United Nations General Assembly, the Maldives highlighted today the importance of realising the right to sovereignty over natural resources, for the implementation of of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The emphasis was made during its statement at the annual debate of the Economic and Financial Committee, on the permanent sovereignty of the Palestinian people in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and of the Arab population in the occupied Syrian Golan over their natural resources.

The Maldives also reaffirmed its continued support for the rights of Palestine, including the need for a two-state solution, as a fundamental step towards safeguarding the human rights of the Palestinian people and finally providing them with the right to self-determination.
