General Assembly to adopt Resolution on Status of Jerusalem

21 December 2017, New York, The General Assembly will consider, and likely will adopt, a Resolution on the Status of Jerusalem at the Tenth Emergency Special Session of the General Assembly to be convened today. The Emergency Special Session is convened following the Security Council's inability to adopt the Resolution on Jerusalem on Monday, 18 December 2017.

The draft Resolution affirms that any decision and actions, which alter the character, status, or demographic composition of the Holy City of Jerusalem have no legal effect, are null and void, and must be rescinded in compliance with relevant Resolutions of the UN Security Council.

The Maldives is a co-sponsor of the draft Resolution, and will deliver a statement at the Emergency Special Session, in which it will reiterate its long held position that the only viable solution to the question of Palestine is for Israel to withdraw from its illegal occupation of Palestine, and help to create conditions for the establishment of an independent and sovereign State of Palestine, with East Jerusalem as its capital, on the Palestinian lands with pre-1967 borders.

Emergency Special Sessions of the General Assembly are convened under the Uniting for Peace Resolution 377 (3 November 1950), which recognises the role of the General Assembly in maintaining international peace and security in instances where the Security Council is unable to arrive at a decision.
