New York, 23 September 2016; Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Maldives, Dr. Mohamed Asim met with the United Nations Secretary General, Mr. Ban Ki-moon today at the UN Headquarters in New York.
During the meeting, the Secretary General expressed his appreciation of the leadership that the Maldives has been demonstrating on global issues such as climate change and sustainable development.
Minister Asim thanked the Secretary General and his team for their excellent and close partnership with the Maldives, in its capacity as the Chair of AOSIS.

23 September 2016, New York; In what has become something of an annual tradition, AOSIS leaders gathered on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly for a luncheon to rejuvenate the group's 26-year partnership. In that time, AOSIS has grown to include 39 members and 5 observers from Small Island States around the world, nearly one-fifth of the UN's voting membership and solidifies its role as the moral conscience of the climate change and sustainable development negotiations.
That group's leadership was on display this week as 8 AOSIS members—Papua New Guinea, Dominica, Kiribati, Singapore, Tonga, Antigua and Barbuda, Vanuatu, and the Solomon Islands completed their Paris Agreement ratification processes, bringing the members to have done so to 25.

New York, 23 September 2016: Participating actively in a variety of side events on oceans issues, the Maldives emphasized the importance of the health of the ocean to small island developing states.
Speaking at a dialogue organized by Norway on Oceans and the Blue Economy, Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Mohamed Asim, argued for the business case for advancing towards a blue economy and its relevance to small island developing states. Dr. Asim called on the international community to increase efforts for sustainable use and conservation of marine resources as a prerequisite for sustainable development in SIDS. He also called on island states to work towards eliminating local threats to marine pollution like waste management, coastal zone management and fishing practices.

23 September 2016, New York; Maldives highlights means of implementation of the means of The Group of 77 held its fortieth annual Meeting of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs on the sidelines of the General Debate of the seventy-first session of the General Assembly today.
Speaking at its interactive debate on issues of importance to the Group of 77, Minister Asim, reiterated the importance of the Group, especially for small states like the Maldives. In particular, he noted the unity and solidarity of the Group as evidenced during the negotiations on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Addis Ababa Action Agenda, The Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction and the Paris Agreement under the UNFCCC. He urged the Group to continue in this vein, as we move into the next phase: implementation.

23 September 2016, New York; The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Maldives, H.E. Dr. Mohamed Asim has met with the Under Secretary-General of the United Nations and High Representative for LDCs, LLDCs, and SIDS H.E. Gyan Chandra Acharya on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
The Minister thanked the Under Secretary-General for his continued support to the Maldives, the Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and to the Alliance of Small Island States which Maldives chairs. The Under Secretary-General in recognized the leadership of Maldives in the lead up to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and the Paris Agreement, as well as the Addis Ababa Action Agenda.
