Aisha_6 October 2016, New York; Underscoring that transnational and organized crime remains an obstacle to sustainable economic and social development, the Maldives has today called for a global commitment to fighting the war against crime. The call was made by the Maldives in its statement to the debate at the 71st session of the United Nations General Assembly under the Agenda Item on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice/International Drug Control.

Delivering the statement on behalf of the Maldives, Ms. Aisha Naeem, Senior State Counsel at the Attorney General's Office emphasized the domestic efforts being undertaken by the Maldives to combat widespread crimes such as drug trafficking, trafficking of persons and money laundering.

Rule_of_Law6 October 2016, New York; The Maldives has underscored that the nation is continuously working to foster a culture of respect for the rule of law by upholding the constitutional segregation of the legislative, executive, and judicial powers of the State, and ensuring all the safeguards necessary to prevent the arbitrary exercise of powers in a manner which is consistent with clear and comprehensive laws established through democratic process.

Speaking on Agenda item 84 – 'Rule of Law at the national and international levels' in the Sixth Committee of the 71st session of the United Nations General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Ahmed Sareer, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Republic of Maldives to the United Nations, highlighted that, the Maldives cannot make exceptions to the rule of law. He mentioned that, uniformity, transparency, and consistency in the application of the rule of law are imperatives to maintain public confidence in the legal and judicial systems.

05 October 2016, Male' : Vice President Abdulla Jihad stated that United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has been a contributor to global development and has provided long-standing support in achieving socio-economic development goals around the world, including the Maldives. He stated this while addressing the participants at a celebratory event held to mark the 50th Anniversary of the founding of the UNDP. The event was held early Wednesday evening at Hotel Jen.

During the speech, the Vice President congratulated, UNDP, for providing 50 years of fruitful service around the globe. In his speech, Vice President highlighted that during UNDP's 38 years of operations in the Maldives, they have worked closely with government ministries and private partners to help realize a myriad of national plans which was in line with developmental aspirations of the Maldivian people.

The Maldives calls on states to comply with their commitments under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty

5 October 2016, New York; In its statement at the General Debate of the Disarmament and International Security Committee of the United Nations General Assembly, the Maldives has stressed the need for augmenting efforts to end proliferation of nuclear weapons and called upon signatories of the Non Proliferation Treaty to fulfill their obligations under the Treaty.

Speaking on behalf of the Maldives, H.E. Mr. Ahmed Sareer, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Maldives to the United Nations has stated that the use of nuclear testing by any country is "not only a flagrant violation of international law, but an obstacle to the proliferation of nuclear weapons". The Maldives appealed to the States pursuing the use of nuclear technology for useful ends, to do so under limits of international law and to not develop nuclear weapons. The statement also expressed concern that such weapons could fall into the hands of non-State actors who operate outside the structural and normative framework of international law, including terrorist groups, and therefore States must redouble their efforts against nuclear proliferation.

Dhana"In the Maldives, efforts are being made to encourage participation of women, youth and persons with disabilities in the community to ensure an inclusive and equitable society", stressed the Maldives delegation at the United Nations General Assembly debate on Social Development. Ms. Farzana Zahir, Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, while speaking at the Third Committee of the 71st session, noted that social inclusion being the core aspiration of the 2030 Agenda and stressed that "this pledge remains at the heart of our efforts".

The statement emphasized the importance of education and health to enable people to acquire the skills and capabilities needed to fully participate and contribute in all dimensions of life. Within this regard, it noted that the Maldives' had introduced a universal health insurance scheme and to provide free education for all children up to higher secondary level. Further, the statement highlighted the Government's efforts to create a conducive environment for the inclusion and participation of persons with disabilities in all aspects of society and development.
