Minister of Environment and Energy H.E Thoriq Ibrahim highlighted the importance of access to appropriate, adequate technology development and transfer in implementation of the Montreal Protocol. Minister congratulated the countries who have ratified the Kigali Amendments of the Montreal Protocol. There was a strong consensus in the meeting of adopting lesson learnt from the implementation of Montreal Protocol in implementation of Paris Agreement.

Kigali Amendments remains a key step identified in the climate actions of the countries. Small Island Developing States, represented currently 50% of the countries who have ratified the Kigali Amendments. Maldives is completing domestic process in the ratification of Kigali Amendments

Maldives assumes chairmanship of the UN Shark Coalition

The Maldives has assumed the Chair of the UN Save Our Sharks Coalition. The Maldives assumed the chairmanship at a function held in New York this afternoon. The Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture, Dr. Mohamed Shainee, accepted the chairmanship on behalf of the Maldives, from the outgoing Chair, the Ambassador of the Bahamas Ms Sheila Carey.

While speaking at the ceremony, Minister Shainee stated that the Maldives is honored to accept the chairmanship of the Shark Coalition and expressed hope to bring even further attention to the plight of sharks around the world and the steps that must be taken to ensure that socio-economic assessments carried out in the Maldives revealed it was more beneficial for the economy to preserve sharks and keep them as a continuous resource to be observed and enjoyed by tourists.

Minister Asim speaks at the High level meeting on Hurricane Irma

Minister Asim extended condolences and expressed solidarity with the people of the Caribbean countries affected by Hurricane Irma, during the High Level meeting held this afternoon at the United Nations headquarters. Minister noted that climate change is making storms stronger and more deadly and expressed hope that an outcome of this latest storm would be a true reckoning with what the world is facing from global warming today.

The purpose of today's meeting was to draw high-level attention to the suffering and loss of livelihoods caused by hurricane Irma. It provided a platform for countries most affected by Hurricane Irma to share their experiences and the international community to express their solidarity with the people of the countries impacted. This meeting was co-hosted by the United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres and the President of the General Assembly Miroslav Lajcak.

New York, 18 September 2017; Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Maldives, Dr. Mohamed Asim, discussed the important role of partnerships and leadership and innovation by Small Island States (SIDS) in responding to Climate impacts and planning for sustainable futures at the meeting organized by AOSIS, in partnership with the European Union and UNDP, this morning.

During Minister Asim's key note speech as the Chair of Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS), he reflected on the importance of partnerships SIDS and stated that the support provided by the partners have facilitated the expansion of capacity of Small Islands to engage in international negotiations on climate change and sustainable development. He further highlighted broadening engagement by AOSIS to issues of critical importance to SIDS such as conservation and sustainable use of the oceans and seas.

Minister Asim also highlighted on the success of the UN Climate Change fellowship programme which was established with the support from the EU and thanked Italy and Netherlands particularly for their assistance. Minister Asim also reflected on the leadership role of the Maldives in bringing climate change to the fore front of the global agenda and highlighted on the collective efforts of the SIDS in formation of the Paris Climate Agreement and its implementation.

The purpose of today's meeting was to provide a platform before the COP23 to acknowledge and showcase the leadership and innovation coming out of Small Island Developing States.

The event was moderated by Mr. Magdy Martinez-Soliman, Assistant Secretary-General, Director of Bureau for Policy and Programme Support of the UNDP. The key note speakers were Mr. Achim Steiner, UNDP Administrator, Mr. Miguel Arias Cañete, European Union Commissioner of Climate Change, Mr. Inia Seruiratu, High-Level Climate Champion and Fijian Minister for Agriculture, Ms. Fekitamoeloa Katoa 'Utoikamanuc, Under Secretary General of OHRLLS and Ms.Yvon Slingenberg, Director, International and Mainstreaming, Directorate General for Climate Action, European Union. The Governor General of Antigua and Barbuda, Sir Rodney Williams also spoke at the meting.

The President of the Republic of Maldives, His Excellency Mr Yameen Abdul Gayoom, appointed Dr Mohamed as the new non-resident Ambassador of the Maldives to Canada on 9 July 2017. Ambassador Mohamed is the Permanent Representative of Maldives to the United Nations as well as the Ambassador of Maldives to the United States.
