Maldives Joins Call for Urgent Adoption of the Draft Convention on Terrorism

Sunday, 06 September 2009 19:00

The Maldives has joined the call by many States to urgently adopt the draft comprehensive convention on terrorism. Speaking at the Committee for Legal Affairs of the General Assembly today, the Maldives Permanent Representative to the United Nations H E Ambassador Abdul Ghafoor Mohamed stated that “while we meet, year after year without results, we fail as a community to attribute criminal accountability to the perpetrators of these heinous crimes. The completion of the draft comprehensive convention on terrorism will provide an overarching instrument that would supplement the existing legal regime that addresses specific terrorist activities and bolster international coordination in the global fight against terrorism. Therefore, as responsible citizens of the international community, we cannot underscore the importance and urgency of finalizing the draft comprehensive convention on terrorism that will give a very necessary impetus to the international counter terrorism framework”.

As with many developing nations, Maldives enjoys a young population which is set to exceed 400,000 people this year, making it the 27th smallest nation by population (out of 194 states). With the median age being around 25 years old, there is a growing need for greater job creation amongst youth together with more youth centric programs.

Over the recent decades there has been a growing trend towards urbanization, with almost a third of the population now located in the country's capital – Malé. In fact, the city has become one of the world's most densely populated areas. This has led to issues of congestion, and reduced the general quality of life for the average citizen.

In education, Maldives has led South Asia achieving universal primary and lower secondary education comprising of one of the best education systems in the region. The nation has also made significant progress in other social areas, having consistently improved maternal health, the nation has been vigilant about combatting diseases.

While we consider ourselves one people without true division, we are composed of many ethnic origins – including Indian, Sinhalese, Arab, and African blood – dating back to when the Silk Road wrapped around the Persian Gulf and down the east coast of India all the way to the Maldives. Then the Maldives was one of the primary origins of cowry shells, the most extensively used monetary shell across the world. It was around this time that Islam came to the Maldives, spreading across the nation, from island to island, from family to family. Soon, the Maldives became and till this day remains a 100% Muslim nation.

Women

The Maldives became a nation founded in moderation, faith and equity progressing in its national development to emerge today as a wholly democratic nation, ever committed to the further progression and fulfilment of our national ideal.

Having had female Monarchs in our history, a matriarchal vein still thrives amongst our island populations with informal Women's Councils ever present and active in setting local priorities. Though the national education system is based in an English medium, traditional and cultural values are still emphasized across the nation.
