His Excellency Mr. Ahmed Sareer, Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the United Nations addressed a panel discussion following New York Premiere of the documentary “On the Edge, Antarctica, on the occasion of the International Mother Earth Day. Congratulating the filmmaker and the Production Team, Ambassador Sareer noted that Maldives was much like Antarctica, in that it was too a microscopic laboratory for what the world must endure in the near future from the impacts of global climate change. The many irreversible changes that affect Maldives do not exist in a distant future, but are instead a current reality. In elaborating these effects, Ambassador Sareer highlighted the changes already taking place on issues of fresh water, nutrition, human health, biodiversity, coastal integrity, and the resultant impacts on the two major economic sectors of fisheries and tourism.

itcThe pervasion of information and communications technology across the Maldivian society has had a dramatic impact on governance and policy making in the country, says His Excellency Mr. Ahmed Sareer, Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the United Nations.  Mobile subscriptions in the Maldives stand at a staggering total of over 560,000 in a population of about 350,000. While 38 per cent of the population uses Internet, the usage of social media is pervasive and significantly higher than most developing countries, with almost all Internet users having Facebook accounts. The Ambassador made the statement while chairing a segment at the 14th Infopoverty World Conference, held at the sidelines of the 47th Session of the Commission on Population and Development.

Maldives accords zero tolerance towards violence against women.

amb csw2His Excellency Mr. Ahmed Sareer, Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the United Nations addressed the situation of women and girls at the Commission on the Status of Women, during the general discussion of its 58th Session.

During the discussion, Ambassador Sareer said that the Maldives has set forth two key visions with regards to women and equality. One is regarding empowerment of women in economic, political sphere, and the other is zero tolerance towards violence against women. Under these key visions, targets and milestones have been identified and are being addressed routinely. It is through these initiatives, the Maldives hopes to succeed in the ultimate goal of achieving parity for women.

A renewed global partnership is an imperative if SDGs were to be successful, says Maldives

His Excellency Mr. Ahmed Sareer, Permanent Representative of Maldives to the United Nations has said that “a renewed global partnership, a more action-oriented update of MDG8 is an imperative”, for the success of Sustainable Development Goals.  He was commenting on the document containing preliminary focus areas for the SDGs at the 9th Session of the Open Working Group. Maldives stated that the SDG framework should be interdependent, cohesive and aspirational in nature and must include a clear means of implementation.

Outlining the Maldives' general position on the way forward, Ambassador Sareer said that the formulation of the SDGs should be guided by the Rio+20 Outcome document, the lessons learnt from the Millennium Development Goals and must avoid isolated sectoral approaches. He recognized poverty eradication as an underlying goal of the SDGs and said that other development gains are linked with this objective, especially food security, nutrition, health, sanitation, water, energy, education and employment.
