The Republic of Maldives and the Principality of Liechtenstein established diplomatic relations today through an exchange of diplomatic notes by the two country’s permanent missions to the United Nations located in New York.

Mr. Aslam Shakir, speaking today at the meeting of the 1st Intergovernmental Preparatory Committee for the Fourth United Nations Conference on Least Developed Countries, highlighted the importance of „smooth transition‟ for countries graduating from LDC status. Although the Maldives considered graduation to be an achievement, he said that the Maldives must not move towards the reality of life as a Middle- Income country with its “eyes wide shut”. On the contrary, he said that we need to be fully aware of the challenges that lie ahead for the Maldives with the loss of LDC benefits and strive to overcome those challenges by speeding up its market based and private sector led economic reforms.

First Intersessional Meeting of UNCSD, UN Headquarters, New York, USA, 10-11 January 2011
The First Intersessional Meeting of UNCSD was held in New York. The informal discussions focused on the objectives and themes of the Conference, which has been charged by the General Assembly to see how efforts to achieve sustainable development can be scaled up, as well as to explore how countries can green their economies and to determine how to strengthen the institutional frameworks for sustainable development. 19th December 2010 – The acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, H. E. Mr. Mohamed Aslam has warmly welcomed the outcome of the 16th Conference of Parties (COP 16) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Cancun, Mexico, as a significant step forward for international efforts to address global warming.
In a letter to the Mexican Foreign Minister Ms. Patricia Espinosa Cantellano, congratulating the success of Cancun, Minister Aslam welcomed Mexico’s strong leadership, and the transparent and inclusive manner in which she conducted the negotiations. He also expressed hope that Ms. Cantellano would continue to play a key role along with South African in the “Troika” that was formed, and that the key elements set down in the Cancun Agreement would eventually form the basis of a new legally-binding treaty to tackle climate change.
