The Maldives has expressed its desire for the total elimination of all weapons of mass destruction during the debate on "General and complete disarmament" at the 69th Session of the United Nations General Assembly.

In its statement, the Maldives noted that it does not produce any armaments or weapons of any type nor has any ambitions to do so. Yet, the threat posed by weapons of mass destruction is as real to the Maldives as to any other country in the world, the statement said.

Democracy cannot be forced in the pages of law, rather need to be instilled in the peoples’ hearts and minds, says Maldives

img_6205In its statement at the Sixth Committee of the General Assembly of the United Nations, the Maldives emphasized its commitment to rule of law. The Maldives noted that its home-grown democracy had achieved complete separation of powers, independent institutions and methods of horizontal accountability through a dedicated application of the "Rule of Law". The Maldives stressed that the voter turnout rates in recent Presidential, Parliamentary and local elections exceeded 90% and reflected the capability of its democratic institutions, as well as the will of its people. However, the statement noted that democracy cannot be forced in the pages of law, rather need to be instilled in the peoples' hearts and minds.

Maldives calls for a people-centred development agenda, inclusive of both young and the ageing

Maldives emphasized the need for holistic, inclusive development that puts people at the centre as it highlighted the country’s priorities as the general debate began on social development at the Third Committee of the 69th Session of the General Assembly.

In its statement, the Maldives noted that the Government of President Yameen Abdul Gayoom is committed to delivering policies that are youth-targeted and youth-oriented because of the large young population in the country.  Major projects, such as the development of “Youth City” would become a major hub for employment, innovation and social welfare, it was announced.  At the same time, the country’s ageing population is on the rise at a rapid pace, legislation and policies have been aimed at addressing financial security, healthcare, shelter and legal protection for senior citizens.  The Maldives has also, in the recent past, enacted policies ensuring gender parity, offering provisions for persons with disabilities as well as special programmes for the welfare of the children.

Maldives committed to the implementation of ICPD Program of Action

icpd amb sareerDuring the Follow-up to the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development at the Plenary of the 69th session of the General Assembly, H.E. Ambassador Ahmed Sareer delivered a statement on the new Secretary General's Report on this issue.

At the 20th anniversary of the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development, recent data and assessments still validates the consensus reached in 1994, said Ambassador Sareer and congratulated countries who supported this vital initiative. He continued to state that the goals enshrined in the ICPD remain crucial to sustainable development today, and should feed into the Post-2015 Development Agenda.

During the annual general debate of the Second Committee, the Maldives set out its priorities for the current session of the General Assembly, that will lay the groundwork for the crucial agreements to be reached in 2015 on climate change and the Post-2015 Development Agenda.


Referring to the recently held Third International Conference on SIDS in Samoa, the Maldives argued that SIDS face unique challenges in striving for sustainable development, as clearly seen from the Maldives experience. Though the country graduated from LDC status in 2011, “the inherent structural challenges of being an archipelago of small, low-lying and remote islands remain". Therefore, the Maldives expects the Secretary General's comprehensive review of the UN system support to SIDS would enhance its overall effectiveness and the respective roles in supporting SIDS sustainable development.
